This unit of HighQuest looks into the nature of God as he has revealed himself in Scripture. It is not an option for us to accept part of God's revealed nature and disregard others, inventing our own image of God, one that makes us comfortable. We discover his glory when we see him as he reveals himself.

The timeless and ultimate purpose of God is to be known for who he is. The prophet Habakkuk wrote centuries ago, "For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of God as the waters cover the sea" (Hab. 2:14). That plan has not changed.

God's glory is the manifestation or revelation of his nature and expresses the reality of his essence. Glory is not itself a separate attribute but the revelation of all his attributes. As light is the visible expression of the essence of the sun, so God's attributes are the light and expression of his nature. As the planets in our solar system glorify the sun by reflecting its light, so we glorify God as we reflect his nature. Glorifying God is to act in such a way that we acknowledge and demonstrate what is true about God.

God is the initiator of his glory, revealing himself in nature, his law, Christ, the Gospel, and his redeemed and transformed people. Now as agents of his glory, we are to reflect with increasing accuracy the reality of God (glorify). As our life transforms to his likeness, it increasingly reflects what is true about God. We are like mirrors constantly needing to be cleaned and polished in order to sharpen the reflection. Therefore, we should not be surprised when God uses the abrasive agent of adversity to accomplish his purpose in and through us.
